What Exactly Is A Clan In Aboriginal Australia?

Kangaroo Ancestor

In traditional Aboriginal Australia a clan is a group of Aboriginal people who are all descended from a common ancestor. A band, on the other hand, is made up of small family groups.

When these families came together they formed a “band”. A band might be made up of 25 to 50 people from one or more families.

This group of families could be made up of several clans. That common ancestor could be Kangaroo, Cockatoo, Echidna or some other animal, plant or thing in the universe. People cannot marry members of the same clan.

A great ancestral spirit gave the clan responsibility for the land and everything in it.
